Basic holidays of the Russian national calendar

At night from December, 31st to January, 1st the Russian people celebrate New Year. Each nation has its customs and ceremonies connected to a New Year holiday, but their sense is one – to meet New Year joyfully with belief in well-being, success and happiness.

Ancient Slavs marked the first days of New Year with cheerful games, carnivals, singing and dancing. This cycle of ceremonies has received the name “Christmas carol”. Their purpose was – "attraction" of crop, well-being and prosperity.

The main New Year's holiday attribute for many nations is fur-tree. Traditional heroes of New Year tree are ancient national characters - Father Frost and Snow Maiden. Father Frost - an embodiment of kindness and generosity, always appears on the holiday with a bag of gifts. The Snow Maiden symbolizes youth, pleasure, and fun. She is a mistress of a New Year's holiday.

7^th of January - Christmas. It is one of the main Orthodox holidays. The great holiday of Christmas is preceded with the Christmas Eve, being time of especially strict post by pious Russian tradition. In Christmas Eve people do not taste food before occurrence in the sky of the first star, and the basic food is “sochivo”, prepared of boiled groats with addition of fruit, berries and honey.

Christmas holidays are called “Christmas-tide”. They begin from the Christmas Eve and proceed till the Christening (on January, 19th). Christmas-tide ceremonies, guessing, amusements take place.

March, 3 9 it is Pancake week. Last day of the Pancake week – Forgiveness Sunday. The national holiday the Pancake week is celebrated one week prior to the Great post. All the days of Pancake week have its special names.
Sedate people began the Pancake week by visiting relatives.

On the 27^th of April it is the Blessed Holiday of Christ Revival. It is named Easter and it is considered the most important holiday of Christian church. Memoirs on sufferings and revival of the Christ have laid down in church ceremonialism of the Holy Week of a post and Sacred week of Easter. Easter is marked in 7 weeks after Pancake week, therefore concrete date can vary from year to year. In total Easter is celebrated for forty days. From spring pagan holiday Easter has taken ritual of illumination of Easter cakes, manufacturing cottage cheese Easter, eggs painting, etc.

Early in the morning, in the first day of Easter, peasants were leaving their houses to look at sun that to base on it the predictions of the future crop.

On the 15^th of June it is the Day of the Sacred Trinity. The Trinity is one of the greatest holidays in an annual national calendar; it is celebrated on the fiftieth day after Easter. The holiday has been connected to an ancient Slavic cult commemoration, reverence of ancestors and glorification of the blossoming nature. Without dependence from date it is a holiday of triumphing spring, on a threshold of coming summer when the nature as though celebrates the revival together with man. A symbol of this blossoming is a young birch.

The Trinity holiday began from the seventh Thursday after Easter. By this day houses and yards had been decorated with greens. People were dancing, singing ceremonial songs, guessed about a marriage and the maiden destiny. In Trinity Saturday families went on a cemetery and carefully decorated tombs with wreaths and birch branches.

July, 6th. Ivan Kupala's holiday. It is marked at night from 6^th to 7^th of July. Kupala is a deity, a symbol of water, and ancient people named the Sun Ivan. This night people celebrated mystical marriage of the Sun and Water from which on pagan legends all alive on the Earth had appeared. The sense of the holiday is joining nature, divine maximum forces. It was a tradition since old days on the night of Ivan Kupala on coast of rivers or lakes to kindle ceremonial fires. The ceremony of jumping through fire was traditional, and reverence of water was shown in general bathing which alternated round dances and songs. Girls spun wreaths.

One of ritual displays of a holiday is participation in it bicolored flower cow-wheat. The legend about the flower which reveals before this day (for example, fern) is widespread also.

Ivan Kupala's modern holiday is far on sense from pagan beliefs, now it is simply folklore holiday with popular bathing under the moon.
