The central squares of the city


The main city square is the square, named after V.I. Lenin. It is impressive in its sizes and original in its decoration. Today this is a place, where the holidays, fairs, festivals are annually taking place. During the summer period, the square looks like a huge blossoming carpet. The traditional decoration of the square are the fountains.

More than a hundred years ago, there was a taiga. Then it was cut and the place was cleared and adapted for a parade-ground. The square was named as the Nikolaev square. In 1917 it has received its new name – as the Freedom square. In the first anniversary from the V.I. Lenin death, the monument to the founder of the soviet state was established there. In 1957 the square was named after V.I. Lenin. In 1998 it was reconstructed and appeared updated, smart and beautiful.

The wide direct highway - Muraviev-Amursky Street - is connecting the Lenin square with the second central city square - Komsomolskaya. It is located above the Amur quay. At first this area was called as Cathedral. There was a large cathedral there. The religious and solemn ceremonies in honor of the high visitors were arranged here. In the thirtieth years of the last century a cathedral was demolished and the square was renamed as the Red Square. In October 25, 1956 at the center of the square, a 22 meters granite monument "to the Heroes of the civil war on the Far East 1918-1922" was opened.

In 2002, on a place of the cathedral destroyed in 30th years, the Temple - monument, Grado-Khabarovsk cathedral of Mother of God Assumption was constructed, now two squares - Komsomolskaya and Sobornaya make a uniform architectural complex.

Central street of the city - is Muraviev-Amursky Street. There is a lot of perfectly kept, ancient stone buildings constructed at the end of the IXX - beginning of the XX centuries. There is also a majority of regional and municipal organizations, shops, central restaurants, cafes, and theatres. The Far East State Scientific library is also located on the Muraviev-Amursky Street. Here one can buy the Far East souvenirs: jewelry, pictures, products of the decorative foremen.

The ancient architecture of the central part of Khabarovsk City differs with its original ensemble of red and gray brick. The modern buildings combining in itself the intelligence of the past and modern style of the future are perfectly adding this ensemble.

The youngest city square - the Glory Square is located on the high coast of the Amur river. It was opened in honor of the 30 anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941 - 1945. A 30-meter monument towers above the center of the square. The names of the Khabarovsk citizens - Heroes of the Soviet Union, Heroes of the socialist labor and Glory Order holders.

To the 40th anniversary of the Great Pariotic War Victory the construction of the second turn of the square was completed. A central structure of a memorial complex - Memorable wall, covering a platform with the semicircle, at the center of which the Eternal flame is burning. The walls, around the flame are storing the names of 32,662 people, who were the citizens of the Khabarovsk region and who did not return from the war.

The railways, from west and east, from north and south are coming together in Khabarovsk. The largest in the Far East railway station is located here. The Railway square is the Railway Gates of Khabarovsk City. There is a monument to Erofei P. Khabarovsk at the center of the square. The expedition of the Russian explorer, Erofei P. Khabarov, has played a large role in connection the Far East to Russia.
