The area of the region occupies 39,1 thousand square kilometers, coming with its eastern part to the Tatar strait. The population of the region makes 22,4 thousand, 15% of them are representative of the small peoples of the North (ulchi, nivkhi, nanaian). The population density is 0,6 men per square kilometer. There are 32 settlements in the region. The centre is Bogorodskoye settlement, located on the Amur riverside in 757 kilometers from the Khabarovsk city and in 350 kilometers from the Komsomolsk-on-Amur railway station.
Climate and rivers. Average temperature of January is about -25,7°C, July -+20,9°C, average per year -1,2°C. From the South up to the North the territory of the region is crossed by the Amur river, branching on some sleeves, forming a plenty of lakes and straits. The largest lakes are Udyl, Kadi, Kizi and Irkutskoye.
External and internal transport communications are provided by the Amur river and through the De-Kastri seaport. There is an airport. The highway Silikhino - Nickolaevsk-on-Amur, crosses the territory of the region.
